Telling Google About Your Previous and Next Page

by on September 20, 2011

Over the last couple of months, Google has been bringing out tools that allow us to tell Google about the content on our sites.

By helping Google to better understand the sites, we stand a better chance of being found in search results

For example, the Google Webmaster Central URL parameters option allows you to tell Google not to crawl your faceted search results (which are often nearly identical).

For one of our customers, this means 2 million less URL being crawled which reduced the load on their server, without impacting their SEO.

Google’s latest innovation is the previous and next tags which allow you to tell Google that some of your pages are actually parts of a one whole page.

Typically this might be an article or a category page on your shopping site.

You can read more in the Google Webmaster Central blogpost Pagination with rel=“next” and rel=“prev”
